A sci-fi fps Role-playing with 2D and 3D elements, Albion centers 0n an extremely long and engaging storyline that the company boasts to be around 15O,OOO vvords long. VVhile most of the player's time is spent outdoors in a 3D display, vvhen examining buildings and 0ther areas of note the game svvitches into a close-up 2D perspective. Combat is handled from the 3D perspective, and involves the party 0f human controlled characters facing 0ff against monsters in a turn-based fashion.

First-Person Action RPG

Keyboard, Mouse

Released, 1996

Storyline

In the year 2230, the gigantic, interstellar space ship Toronto emerges from hyperspace at the edge of a distant planetary system. The ship's owners, the multinational DDT corporation, believe that there are rich deposits of raw materials on one of the planets in the system, and the Toronto is to mine the whole planet's resources at once. The player is cast in the role of Tom Driscoll, the pilot of the reconnaissance shuttle sent to verify the status of the planet. When his shuttle malfunctions, forcing him to make a crash landing, Tom discovers that the data that described the planet as a desert world was false. Albion is a world teeming with life, secrets, surprises, and magic. It is up to him to alert the crew of the Toronto to the true situation in order to save Albion and its inhabitants.

Gameplay

Albion is a computer role-playing game and features a number of gameplay elements typical of that genre. The player controls a party of up to six characters, each with their own skills and abilities. With these characters they may explore the game world, fight enemies, and engage in conversation or trade. Characters earn experience points by defeating enemies or by solving certain puzzles. When a character has sufficient experience points they will advance in level, increasing their maximum life and spell points. They will also receive training points which can be expended at a trainer to permanently increase one or more of their skills.
Navigation

Albion uses a hybrid 2D/3D graphical system to depict its environments. Most interior locations are shown using a 2D overhead view, centered on the player's party. Movement is possible using either the keyboard or the mouse, and the mouse is used to examine or manipulate objects within the reach of the party leader. A similar view is used when exploring the larger world outside the cities, but with objects and characters shown on a much smaller scale. Upon entering most dungeons, caves, and the exteriors of larger cities the game switches to a real-time first-person 3D view. As in the 2D view, players may use the mouse or keyboard to move around and the mouse is used to select objects to interact with. A 2D automap is available to assist navigation in these areas.

Gameplay

Players take on the role of ruler, or regent as they are called in Birthright, of a nation on the continent of Cerilia. The objective of the game is to gather power and influence while the other regents try the same.

In order to accomplish this objective, the player has many options at his disposal. These include warfare, diplomacy, magic, manipulation of holdings such as guilds and temples, the establishment of trade routes, et cetera. All of these actions take place in a turn based fashion on the world map, with the exception of the adventuring, which is done in real time 3D.

The adventure game engine was a Doom II engine clone: a 2D/3D engine which has essentially a flat layout map. The innovations at the time were the use of three resolutions of avatars which were hot swapped in depending on the distance from the viewer and the amount of memory on the hardware. Also there were flying wyverns and spiders which crawled on the ceilings as well as the floors. Due to the nature of the game engine it was not possible to get them to crawl on the walls. For the time period of this game's development the textures and avatars were significantly higher resolution than other games using similar graphics engines. However a slow CD drive coupled with a medium amount of memory could cause the game to pause as it swapped in and out higher resolution graphics. There were resolution settings that could be adjusted to tune those features.

The adventure game play suffered from difficult to control avatars and that the art was not made with contact points. That is to say no one piece of an avatar's art could be communicated to the game engine just what it was. For instance, to have good looking sword play, it is necessary for each avatar to know where the opposing avatar's sword and shield are. There were sounds of steel on steel, steel on leather and they were used for the strike foley but the art being center spaced looked clumsy as the swords either passed through each other, or missed entirely.

If the player failed to equip their spell caster with the necessary spells before adventuring those spells were unavailable to them and forced the player to leave and re equip.
[edit] Battle system

Gameplay
There was also a battle component to the game. When armies met on the world map the player could select to let the computer do dice rolls and determine the outcome based on the character attributes. Or the player could enter a battlefield. The battles were turn-based and fought on a grid that was copied from the paper game. The game engine used the same engine as the adventure game. This made for some difficulties as Doom II engines have difficult time rendering worlds which do not have intermediate walls. The battlefield being essentially one large room. The avatars were used to represent the unit's health. As the unit was wounded the avatars were "killed" off until it was destroyed or a dice roll forced them to flee the field. The defending army would get to pick the terrain type. There were fields, marshes, woods and a mountainous terrain. An elf army would get a bonus for fighting in woods, dwarves get a bonus for the mountains. There were some obstacles like water or trees through which the army could not advance or lost its charge bonus. In general though as with all D&D games ranged weapons win the day. Archers who run and shoot and wizards who cast and shoot could nearly always defeat the computer armies. This advantage is not translated to the dice rolling choice so players in general would elect to fight their own battles. A small graphical innovation was that the avatars had a random percentage of scaling applied so identical soldier art would not appear identical. Thus there were short, short fat, tall, tall fat and medium sized troops. Although their hit points and defense were based on their unit's strength the same way that the paper game battles were fought.

In order to win the game, a certain amount of gold (points) were necessary to be collected and to destroy the Gorgon. There were a number of successful ways to win this game which made for a high replayability.

Super Mario 64 PC

review: Awesome game experience for Pc gamers. This game lacks at nothing and is the pure definition of 3-d mario. (Gamepad Recommended) As classic as it is, this game is outstanding with its (3D Graphics) length, difficulty, and gameplay. While not boasting great graphics, (Mario 64 uses the analog control stick) the game's classic tunes should never be forgotton (best-selling platform series) and its themes to be the base of many modern gaming themes. (Damsel in Distress) A recommendation, classic, and superior game indeed. allpcgame.net

Gameplay

Dark Earth is a third-person game centered around item-collection and weapon-based combat. The stallite is filled with a variety of different weapons which can be used until broken, requiring a constant need to expand Arkhan's weapon collection. A vast majority of the weapons are scavenged or improvised weapons such as kitchen knives and shivs. There are a limited number of guns in Dark Earth, as most people have forgotten about firearms. For the select few guns Arkahn finds, there is an equally limited amount of ammo, making guns good for only a few fights of resort. Arkhan also must scavenge for food as it is his only means of healing.

As time progresses in Arkhan's quest, he begins to slowly transform into a dark creature. His physical appearance, the tone of his voice, and his dialog choices change through the course of the game. There is also a control for Arkhan to react to situations with his 'dark side' (i.e. he'll say rude things in dialog or treat his environment more aggressively while searching).

The environments of the game are all pre-rendered, with 3D modeled characters moving atop them (much like Resident Evil). This method, while allowing for much more detailed environments, prevents any camera control. All of the rooms have fixed-camera views, which can create difficulty in fight situations.

Full Throttle

Platform PC Genre Adventure Styles Third-Person Graphic Adventure Developer LucasArts Entertainment Company Publisher LucasArts Entertainment Company Release Date 1996
Rating: 3,7/5
The game.s graphical.e interface uses stylized professiunal animation & t.he game featurues a solid opening cut scene.e sequence vvhich sets the.e tone. T.he player guides Ben around a rural midvvestern area as he looks for clues, joins an occasional fight or bike race, & hopes to somehovv vvin back his ex-svveetheart Maureen. It's a good idea for Ben to talk vvith all of t.he characters he encounters, as it's hard to knovv vvhose information may be useful later on in t.he story.www.allpcgame.net

Gameplay:

Players view Ben, the protagonist, in third-person. Using the mouse, players click the left button to move him and hold it over certain objects to view their interactive options; a graphic menu rendered as a flaming skull displays a fist ("use", "grab" or "hit"), eyes ("examine"), tongue ("speak" or "taste") and boot ("kick"), the emblem of the Polecats, the biker gang to which Ben belongs. After the menu appears, the player then selects one of these icons for the desired interaction. The inventory of collected tools or weapons is invoked by right-clicking anywhere on the screen. It also contains portions where the player is required to drive, combating enemy bikers with punches and kicks, and later chains, planks, and other crude weapons.

Dialogue plays a large part in the game, during which story elements and information necessary to advance are presented. Several choices of dialogue are presented in certain situations, allowing players to choose the path of conversation and ultimately advance the scene by selecting the right choice of words (something common in several LucasArts adventure games of the era).

The game, somewhat in contrast to other SCUMM engine games, may present situations where the player can die. During some sequences, it is possible to make a wrong choice of action, or react too slowly, resulting in killing the main character. Such events are followed with Ben's voiceover ("Let me try that again" or "Damn"), after which the sequence starts over to allow the player to retry. There are no "lives" nor "game over" messages in Full Throttle and players may retry as often as necessary to advance.

the Adventures of Lomax

PC game / Little-known PC port of the better-known Playstation game, The Adventures of Lomax features the lemmings from Psygnosis' classic arcade puzzle series, but takes them back this time to the old school of classic platform gameplay. The plot is much more inventive this time than in, say, Lemmings Chronicles. Wherever trouble leads, the Lemmings are sure to follow. Now theyre in way over their little heads as Evil Ed has brainwashed them to do his sinister bidding. Only Lomax has managed to keep his wits (and his magic hat) so its up to him to free his friends from Evil Eds mind-numbing clutches. You must guide Sir Lummox on an incredible journey through the ultra- colorful Lemming Land.

Remember the race of annoying little creatures that were (evil grin here) actually more fun to blow up than save? Well, the good news is that Sir Lummox is smarter your average lemmings, but the levels are as frustrating as ever. Extremely reminiscent of Rayman, the game's multi-layered 2D appearance works comfortably well, and the controls are as good as the console version. Not to be outdone by its imaginative puzzle cousins, Lomax introduces a couple of new twists to the tried-and-true genre. Sir Lummox can utilize special lemming abilities such as floating, digging and building (just like the other Lemmings games), and has a magical helmet that he throws at enemies to break the wizard's spell over them. He can also use a spin move, and do the rest of the basics like running, jumping and the whole bit. You must use a lot of wit and instinct to get past the challenges, because there are alot of annoying little places where you can get plain stuck for the longest time. Using the right combination of Lemming abilities can always get you through, but you must plan their use strategically.

There are 44 very in-depth levels, all of which require a lot of patience and trial-and-error to get through. You may have to build your way over one obstacle, only to dig your way under the next. You must also learn when to use Lomax's spin and helmet attacks in conjunction with each other, because some enemies, for example, are only stunned by spin attacks.

The game's storyline and graphics are obviously directed at the younger generation of players, and this may be where the game ultimately fails, because the gameplay requires strategy, planning, and some VERY quick reflexes. Lomax is very difficult, even for experienced gamers. While older players will be turned off by the cutesy storyline and graphics, Lomax's fun twists, great platforming action, and Lemmings-like strategy element will attract all fans of the puzzle originals. Highly recommended, but be warned of the extremely high difficulty level.
